Have we all stopped interacting with each other, for real? Have we truly advanced to the point of technological interactions only? Is this advancement? Does the technology that has replaced the regular occurrence of human contact have the capacity to feel and love, in addition to compute?
Skin hunger, or touch deprivation, is the term used to describe the condition that occurs in humans who lack meaningful physical contact, no contact at all. This has harmful effects on mental health if not recognized or resolved. I fear we live in a world built upon touch deprivation. With the use of technology we can push the idea of “organism,” and we have, through the creation of social media and through the creation of virtual beings, artificial intelligence, and operating systems that you can summon by voice. However without is without; the virtual body may have artificial intelligence, computers may perhaps be programmed for deep learning, but if a machine has theses things then it also knows what it is lacking. Touch.
